Getting to know you: Martin Downey

06/06/2018

The Housing Festival 2018 is being organised by CIH Futures NI; a group of ambitious and talented young housing professionals who are eager to show the fun side of the housing sector! In this ‘get to know’ series of blogs we will introduce each member of CIH Futures NI individually – so that you can get to know them a little bit better! Next up, it’s Martin Downey...

First, tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Martin Downey; I am 25 years old and live in Magheralin. I completed the Housing Management degree at Ulster University in 2015 and have worked in housing ever since across a range of roles. In my spare time I play for my local Gaelic football team, have a keen interest in anything sport related and music.

Tell us about your job and organisation...

I am one of two tenant engagement officers with Radius Housing, the largest Housing association in Northern Ireland providing quality and affordable social housing across the province. We provide sheltered housing for the over 55’s and general needs housing for families and single people, residential care, floating support to help people live independently for longer and recently we entered the affordable housing for sale market. I really enjoy creating opportunities to engage with our customers in new ways.

Why did you become a CIH member?

Housing as a profession is a highly volatile environment with so many factors constantly changing the state of play, this means to stay ahead of the curve it is vital to be informed and that is what the CIH offers on top of excellent training opportunities. It is appealing to be part of CIH NI futures group to try and help ensure new professionals are also aware of the benefits of CIH membership.

What attracted you to working in housing?

For me housing is full of opportunities to work in many different departments and get involved in exciting projects. The chance to constantly improve skills and challenge your way of thinking on a range of issues is also important. Now I am in housing I have to note how much I enjoy working with so many talented and passionate individuals.
